Aerial Apparatus Operator


This course will prepare students as aerial operators, according to NFPA 1002, Standard for Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Professional Qualifications (2003 edition). Topics will include types of aerial apparatus construction; positioning, stabilizing, and operating telescoping and articulating aerial equipment; strategy and tactics when using aerial apparatus; and the inspection and testing of aerial apparatus.

Basic Pump Operations

Revised 2006
This course will discuss the various types of pumps used on fire apparatus, including shifting mechanisms, primers, relief valves, and controls. Pump safety and operations will be covered as well as basic pump maintenance. The course will be taught using a combination lecture/practical evolution format.

Dynamics of Emergency Vehicle Response

This course will identify the components of space management and will define the factors of speed management. In addition, students will be able to describe the proper use of lights and sirens, to identify special situations and hazards associated with emergency vehicle driving, and to describe the safe operation of emergency vehicle driving in special situations and under different hazards.

Emergency Vehicle Driver Training

Recently redesigned and updated by VFIS, this course incorporates the major elements of a comprehensive driver’s training program: classroom instruction, competency course, and testing. This course will teach students to use their own thought processes and will make them aware of the tragedy, financial loss, and legal and moral responsibilities associated with operating emergency vehicles.

Emergency Vehicle Safety

This course is an interactive lecture/discussion that utilizes a printed text and videotape. Topics covered will include following distance and rate of closure, civilian drivers yield the right-of-way, intersection crossing procedures, use and misuse of red lights and sirens, and operator awareness.

Mobile Water Supply Operations

This course will provide participants with hands-on experience with moving water from the source to the fireground in a safe and efficient manner. Participants will participate in several practical exercises designed to give them practice with the operation of floating pumps, portable pumps, folding tanks, tanker trucks, supply pumpers, and other associated tools and appliances. Whether or not your department operates from a pressurized water source, this course will be a benefit to you.

Host Requirements:
• 2 minimum, 750 GPM, Pumpers with drafting capabilities and working compound gauges.
• 4 or more tankers (traditional or non traditional methods)
• Minimum 1,000’ 2 1/2” hose or larger
• 2-3 drop tanks
• Low flow strainers, barrel or floating
• Siphon devices
• Ample static water source
• Large enough area for outside activity
• Scale facility (optional)

Pumping Apparatus Driver/Operator Course

This course is designed for individuals who are new to the position of driver/operator or who anticipate future promotion to that position. Students will discuss duties and responsibilities of the driver/operator, apparatus maintenance, fire-pump theory, pumping apparatus, water supply issues, fire apparatus positioning, and deployment. Participants also will operate fire apparatus in various situations. Both written and practical tests will be given in compliance with the objectives of the course.

Prerequisite: Firefighter I or equivalent; Vehicle Driver Training, (students must possess a valid driver’s license)
